Sam Darnold refused to bow down to four sacks and three turnovers, responding with three touchdown passes in the second half. Minnesota’s defense added to Indianapolis quarterback Joe Flacco’s return as a starter, leading the Vikings to a 21-13 victory over the Colts on Sunday night.
Wide receiver Justin Jefferson showcased his talent with 137 yards, and Jordan Addison’s spectacular one-handed catch in the end zone got Minnesota on the scoreboard after a lackluster first half. Jalen Nailor’s touchdown reception helped snap the Vikings’ (6-2) two-game losing streak.
Colts Struggle to Find Footing, Flacco Faces Tough Return
Kenny Moore II’s 38-yard punt return in the second quarter was the only touchdown for the Colts (4-5) in their first game of the season that didn’t end by six points. Flacco, who replaced Anthony Richardson, struggled throughout the game amid criticism of his recent performance issues. The fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft had previously sparked controversy when he went to play, citing fatigue.
Notable Activities and Game Highlights
Despite his difficult comeback, Flacco, the former AP NFL Comeback of the Year, was 16 of 27 for 179 yards with one touchdown. The Colts were down 14-10 midway through the fourth quarter when they got to the Minnesota 40, but Harrison Smith’s consecutive touchdown passes led to the conversion on downs. Darnold, who was 28 of 34 for 290 yards, connected with Josh Oliver to tie the game with just over two minutes remaining.
Remembering Past Glories and Overcoming Obstacles
The Vikings’ first-quarter performance looked similar to the game two years ago when they rallied from a 33-0 halftime deficit to beat the Colts 39-36 in overtime. However, this time they were short on touchdowns, limiting the Colts to just 92 yards on 20 plays.
Unfortunately, rookie Will Reichard missed a 53-yard field goal attempt, which the 31-year-old hit wide right. Darnold quickly compounded these mistakes by throwing to TJ Hockenson for a dangerous double coverage, which led to an interception in the end zone by Zaire Franklin.
Program Changes and Challenges
Minnesota welcomed tight end Hockenson back from a knee injury that prematurely ended his 2023 season. Despite the initial hiccup, Darnold rekindled their connection. However, the Vikings’ offensive line faced a major challenge against the Colts’ fearsome defense, which kept pressure on Darnold.
Looking Forward
The Colts will host Buffalo next Sunday, and the Vikings will travel to Jacksonville.
Significant Injury
For the Colts, LT Bernhard Raimann (concussion) was replaced by rookie Matt Goncalves, and Vikings LB Blake Cashman (toe) missed his third straight game.
