Home cooked food is delicious in October with the most expensive vegetables
Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian home-cooked meals became more expensive in October due to the hike in vegetable prices, a report said on Wednesday.
The cost of a vegetable thali rose 20 percent to Rs 33.3 per plate compared to the year-ago period and up from Rs 31.3 in September mainly due to higher prices of vegetables, rating agency Crisil said.
The monthly ‘roti rice rate’ report said onion prices were up 46 percent year-on-year in October, while potato prices were up 51 percent mainly due to persistent rains, which led to low arrivals and affected harvests in Maharashtra and Karnataka, it said.
The report also said that tomato prices have doubled to Rs 64 per kg from Rs 29 per kg last year as rains have affected arrivals, the report said, adding that prices of the commodity are likely to stabilize from November. and goods from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
The report said that vegetable prices weigh 40 percent of the total cost of a thali and hence fluctuations have affected the overall cost.
Prices of pulses, which weigh 11 percent of the vegetable meal, rose 11 percent during the month due to low stock openings, reduced stock pipelines and holiday demand, the report said, adding that a fall in prices was expected. from December for new arrivals.
An 11 percent drop in fuel costs a year has helped curb food cost overruns, the report said. In the case of non-vegetarian thali, a 9 per cent drop in the price of chicken, which forms part of the cost of the thali, has led to a slight increase in costs, the report said.
A homemade non-veg thali cost Rs 61.6 in October compared to Rs 59.3 a month ago and Rs 58.6 a year ago, the report said. The prices of vegetables, which comprise 22 percent of the cost of non-veg thali, have also affected the cost of non-veg thali, he said.
