Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy underwent a second surgery on his right knee earlier this week.

Coach Kevin O’Connell said on Wednesday that the procedure took place due to inflammation that arose when McCarthy began to increase the level of rehabilitation. The first procedure in mid-August was an end-of-season operation to repair extensive meniscus damage.

“We know he’s had what I would consider a major injury in training camp, he’s knocked it out of the park every time,” O’Connell said Wednesday. “When we were growing up, we saw that there was swelling. When we had him, he was doing everything we asked of him. We wanted to make sure there was no reason to worry, and all the reports were there. He’s very good. He’s in his first season and he’s in really good shape where he is.

McCarthy remains ready to prepare before the 2025 season, when he will have the opportunity to expand a draft team that has already produced four more starters: Caleb Williams (Bears), Jayden Daniels (Commanders), Drake Maye (Patriots) and Bo Nix (Broncos).

McCarthy suffered the injury in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Aug. 10. Completed 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the contest.

McCarthy was the No. 10 overall pick in 2024 out of Michigan. He quickly took over the Vikings offense and was the favorite to win the starting job before his injury.

Seven-year veteran Sam Darnold has renewed his career by passing for 2,141 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in nine games. The TD pass is just a career high.

Minnesota (7-2) visits the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
