Daniel Jones bids farewell to Giants, blamed for team’s struggles: ‘I’m 100% responsible for my part’
Daniel Jones doesn’t usually sit back and watch the New York Giants, but after being demoted from the church, he’s biding his time as the franchise’s Big Blue quarterback is done after six seasons.
This is not the way Jones, the No. 6 pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, he wanted his time with the Giants to end — a losing 2-8 season where his play didn’t justify him starting the entire year.
But head coach Brian Daboll made it official, with Tommy DeVito promoted to the starting role and Jones moving back to QB4 with the team bringing in veteran Tim Boyle.

Speaking for the first time since the move, Jones gave an opening statement to members of the media at the party’s headquarters in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where it was nothing short of a class act.
“The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true,” Jones began. “I’m very grateful to the Mara and Tisch families for the opportunity to play here. The Giants are truly a great organization, and I have nothing but respect and sincere appreciation for the people who built it and the people who run it. For that culture.
“I take full responsibility for my role in not bringing more wins. No one wanted to win more games than me, and I gave everything I had on the field and in my preparations. Yes, this season disappointed everyone and yes I wish I could have done more. I am 100% guilty of my part, I did not play well enough, continuously enough to help the team get results requires constant performance of everyone involved we didn’t do that well, so the idea of changing something it happens and i understand.

“I love the game, I love being part of the team, and I’m excited for the next opportunity. I know there’s a lot of good football ahead of me and I’m excited about that. To all the fans, I really respect your passion and love for the Giants. The fans are a big part of what makes playing for the Giants so special. a lot.
The writing was on the wall for Jones after his concussion against the Carolina Panthers in Munich, Germany was the last straw for Daboll, GM Joe Schoen and the entire organization.
Jones said there were discussions between Schoen and his agents, where the Giants’ GM explained what the move would be. And Jones wouldn’t support DeVito, as he has a $23 million injury guarantee built into his contract that would kick in if he were to get injured.
That’s why the Giants brought in Boyle and kept Jones away from anything that could lead to injury. Usually in these situations – look at the Las Vegas Raiders with Derek Carr – teams will let the player just sit at home and prepare for what’s coming with their next team.
For now, Jones is still “processing” and wants to help.
“I’m doing everything I can to help Tommy prepare, help the team prepare and that’s what I’m going to do right now. To process that, I think the decision has been made and not to play,” Jones said.
As for that injury certainty, Jones didn’t say exactly that, but it sounds like he’s trying any way he can to stay on the field for the Giants. He was asked if he would waive the injury guarantee to return to the field.
“I want to play. I want to be on the field,” he said. “I think I tried to do everything possible to make that happen and create a situation where we were both comfortable, but most of those discussions went on with my agent and Joe. I want to play, I want to be there. The field, but it’s the unfortunate business side of the game.
“I got an injury guarantee, so that’s it and I understand. They don’t want to take any risks. So, yeah, at that point just do as you’re told.”
Despite his efforts, Jones will continue to sit in the back during practice sessions, and help out wherever he can. But he, like everyone else, knows his NFL future lies elsewhere, which is emotional, especially when he feels the support of his teammates.

“I’ve created a lot of good relationships here with the guys here, and I appreciate the support,” Jones said, beaming. “But it’s about the team and what’s best for the team. I know the boys will be ready to go, and Tommy will be ready to go this week.”
