The NYT op-ed says that ‘angry’ men, the ‘manosphere’ and total anger and loneliness led to Trump’s victory.

The New York Times pointed out that the success of President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 election was caused by angry young men and their creation of a “manosphere,” according to the author, “reinforcing the norm of the male breadwinner.”

The piece, written by playwright Sarah Bernstein, argued, “our cultural narratives still reflect the idea that a woman’s status can be elevated by marrying a highly successful man — and a man is diminished by pairing with a highly successful woman.”

An op-ed titled, “How Our Dirty Dating Culture Leads to Loneliness, Anger and Donald Trump,” noted that men’s and women’s fortunes were trending in opposite directions. After Trump was declared the winner of Harris, many blamed his victory on sexism, misogyny and racism.

“Now that women are pushing forward, this myth is becoming more and more unattainable. This development is causing men and women to retreat into old gender stereotypes and creating a hostile divide between them that is fueling the manosphere explosion. With so much chaos in our collective love lives, it’s no wonder that Americans are experiencing increasing loneliness, the declining birth rate and – as evidenced by Donald Trump’s popularity among young men – a lot of threatening anger to reshape our democracy,” Bernstein said.

Bernstein argued that modern romantic comedies promote the idea that women should have a successful career “and a husband who does better than her.”

He wrote that “the norm of the male breadwinner,” paved the way for the creation of the manosphere, which, according to Bernstein, “is a place occupied by new news podcasters and popular politicians who win eyeballs, votes and dollars by selling a retrograde version of masculinity as a solution to men’s problems.”

Trump, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, appeared on several popular podcasts ahead of the 2024 election. The president-elect has joined the Nelk Boys, Joe Rogan, Theo Von and others, in an effort to attract young, male voters.

“Although the so-called female gold diggers are the obsession of the manosphere, much of their content reinforces the male breadwinner culture – tying money to masculinity and favoring women as providers in biology,” writes Bernstein.

Harris has appeared on podcasts, including the “Call her Daddy” podcast, Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” and more. The Harris campaign tried to get the vice president on Rogan’s podcast, but ultimately it didn’t happen.

The numbers suggest a shift among Gen Z as a whole. Democrats historically rely on at least 60% of the youth vote, but early exit polls suggested Harris came in at just 54% of youth support, NPR reported.
