South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun resigned following President Yoon Suk-yeol’s temporary declaration of martial law.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol accepted the resignation of the country’s Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and appointed the country’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Choi Byung-hyuk, as the new defense minister, according to the country’s Yonhap news agency.
The presidential office confirmed the appointment of Choi, a former army general, as the new defense minister on Thursday.
According to the Reuters news agency, Kim reportedly advised President Yoon to declare martial law on Tuesday night, a move that was quickly canceled after South Korea’s parliament voted for Yoon to reverse his decision.
