During an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box Europe, Matt Calkins, CEO of Appian, discussed the intelligence industry and artificial law in the United States when Donald Trump is about to become president.
When asked if there is a gold rush regarding AI, Calkins agreed. He said AI comes with a lot of anxiety, especially among CEOs. This is because AI has the potential to embarrass organizations or compromise sensitive data, which creates uncertainty. “We all want a safe way to take the first step with AI,” he said.

As for whether companies are afraid to use AI profitably, Calkins noted a cautious approach from many businesses, while large tech firms are investing aggressively. “It’s a calculated risk, and they should be doing it,” he said, comparing this to the restraint shown by small companies.
Speaking about the law, Calkins pointed out that the bottom line is that AI can be dangerous in some way if misused, emphasizing the importance of regulatory frameworks. He pointed to the European AI Law as an example, explaining that regulation could focus on restricting how AI is used or limiting the types of data it can access.
As the Trump administration moves in, Calkins predicted a stronger focus on competing with China in the technology space. He also pointed out Elon Musk’s influence on Trump, saying that Musk’s influence on the Trump administration is good because he knows deeply about artificial intelligence.
In other recent news, Sam Altman announced a special event titled “12 Days of OpenAI”. Altman will be unveiling a new model or feature every weekday for two weeks, Altman posted on X, formerly Twitter. Other new models and features that users have been predicting include the AI video generator Sora, a complete version of the “o1” thinking model, and better control of ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice feature.
“Each day of the week, we will have a live stream with a launch or demo, some big ones and some packaging stuff”.
