Dick Van Dyke Jokes About His Age Ahead of 99th Birthday
A veteran actor Dick Van Dyke will soon celebrate his 99th birthday – and is marking the occasion with a guest TV appearance.
The Mary Poppins star, who will turn 99 on Friday, December 13, made an appearance Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday, December 5.
Van Dyke was joined by Chris Martin appearing on television to discuss Coldplay’s new music video for “All My Love,” in which the actor appears with his son. Barry73.
They shared a funny moment on set, Martin, 47, recalled seeing the father and son switch between Dick and Barry.
“I saw Barry come up to Dick and say, ‘Dad, can I open the pool slide?'” Martin said. “It was very nice because it was like a son and his father. But there are a total of 176 [years old],”
Continuing the conversation about what it’s like to be a parent to older children, Van Dyke acknowledged the age of his children. (Dyke is also a father A Christian74, Stacy,68, and Carrie, 62, all of which he shared with his late ex-wife, Margie Willett).
“I’m old enough Joe Bidenof my father,” he joked.
Earlier this year, Van Dyke joked that he hoped he was still alive to celebrate his 99th birthday.
“I’m really old,” Van Dyke told a photographer in September, on Page Six.
When asked if he had any plans to celebrate his birthday in December, he joked, “I’m just praying that I make it.”
That same month, Van Dyke sparked concern after canceling a series of scheduled appearances, including a fan meeting in Utah.
“We regret to announce that Dick Van Dyke is unable to attend FanX,” read a statement from FanX, the company that runs the three-day event. “He expresses his gratitude to all those who continue to support him but, at the age of almost 99, traveling and interacting with thousands of people is more than he can do right now.”
She also pulled out of the 2024 Emmy Awards on September 15 despite plans to be one of the night’s celebrity hosts.
However, he attended the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 7 where his CBS special, Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic, won the award for Outstanding Variety Special.
As well as joking he was “still looking for a job”, Van Dyke shared his hope that his legacy would be “laughter”.
“For making people laugh for 75 years,” he told reporters about what he wants to be remembered for. “I’ve been in the business for 75 years, I can’t believe I’m still here and playing!”
Van Dyke flexed his funny bone again when he gave a speech at the Daytime Emmy Awards in June when he made history as the oldest winner.
“Thank you. I can’t believe this. I feel like a spy from late-night television,” Van Dyke said in his acceptance speech. “I’m the oldest man in history. I’ve been playing old men all my life. If I’d known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself.”
Before the speech, Van Dyke expressed his disbelief in the award in an interview with him ET that month.
“Am I really the old one? I didn’t know I was the old one,” he said ET. “I will be darn. I think I’m the last of my generation, really. I am 98 years old. I almost have all my marbles. I don’t remember what I ate in the morning.”
