2 trains canceled, few diverted due to rail blockade in Bengal

A rail blockade by protestors at Jorai railway station in West Bengal demanding another district of Cooch Behar led to the cancellation of two trains and the diversion of several others on Wednesday, an official said.

The New Jalpaiguri-Guwahati Vande Bharat Express was among the trains canceled due to the Greater Coochbehar People’s Association (GCPA) agitation, he said.

The blockade at Jorai railway station on the Alipurduar section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) began at 6.45 am, disrupting the movement of trains on the route connecting the northeastern states and the rest of the country.

The protestors said they held an “endless” train to demand their demand for the construction of ‘Greater Coochbehar’.
“Efforts are on to remove the blockade,” an NFR official said.

22227/22228 New Jalpaiguri-Guwahati-New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express and 15704/15703 Bongaigaon-New Jalpaiguri-Bongaigaon Express have been canceled due to agitation, he said.

At least eight trains have been diverted on the new Coochbehar-Golakganj-Fakiragram route, the official said.

The diverted trains include 20503 Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express, 12423 Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express, 15657 Brahmaputra Mail and 15959 Kamrup Express, he said.
