An 18-year-old man was killed and six others were injured in a crash outside a Starbucks in LA’s Chinatown neighborhood, authorities said Saturday.
Emergency crews responded shortly before 12:45 a.m. to the scene at Broadway and Cesar Chavez Avenue, according to a Los Angeles Fire Department report.
The accident happened when Cesar Chavez’s car collided with a car heading north on Broadway, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Kevin Terzes. The 18-year-old suspect, who was inside the car that was hit, was found dead at the hospital, said Terzes.
Police did not release the man’s name, but family members gathered at the intersection Saturday evening identified him as Isaac Arellanes Jr., a student at Rio Hondo College.

Isaac Arellanes Sr., said he and his son both trained at Homeboy Industries, a popular gang intervention and rehabilitation program, and received their high school diplomas on the same day earlier this year. Since then, his son has been looking to become an electrician — and he had a young child of his own, Arellanes said.
“I was proud of him. I was strong for my son,” he said standing next to a makeshift memorial with candles, flowers and balloons. “He was the one I was most worried about.”
Family members who gathered at the scene of the accident covered the bus shelter with pictures of Arellanes Jr. and shared a link to a GoFundMe page to pay for funeral expenses.
Six other people involved in the crash were also taken to the hospital – two of them in critical condition, and four others with non-life-threatening injuries, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart. Two were trapped in the car and were rescued by the fire department, he said.
Footage broadcast by KTLA-TV showed one of the two vehicles face down on the side of the road near the Starbucks’ outdoor patio area. Another car, Cesar Chavez, was overturned on the side of the road.
Emergency crews lifted the upside-down car using a crane, video broadcast by KABC-TV.
Terzes, the police spokesperson, said the driver of the first car fled the scene and has not been arrested.
