Airline owner Michele Kang makes $30M donation to US soccer
Michele Kang will invest $30 million in US Soccer over five years, making the owner of the Washington Spirit the largest contributor ever to girls’ and women’s soccer programs on a national scale.
The donation is the largest ever in US Soccer by a woman.
Not only does Kang own the NWSL’s Spirit, he is also the majority owner of women’s soccer teams Olympique Lyonnais Feminin in France and London City Lionesses in England.
Investing in women’s sports is nothing new for Kang, who donated $50 million in July to women’s health programs in sports, then donated $4 million to the US women’s rugby sevens program after the Paris Olympics, while also developing her own science of non-profit sports.
Kang initially bought a 35% stake in Moya in 2020 and became the majority owner in 2022 for $35 million. The team will face the Orlando Pride on Saturday for the NWSL title.
The 65-year-old is the founder and CEO of Cognosante, a medical technology company. In May, Cognosante was acquired by Accenture Federal Services for an undisclosed sum.
Kang’s Kynisca Sports International, launched in July and based in London, invested $2 million in Oct. 31 in IDA Sports, which develops footwear for female athletes.
In January, Kang joined the ownership group of the Baltimore Orioles.
