Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ director admits why people might not see the movie after the filmmaker’s death.

Three years after the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, “Rust,” a Western starring Alec Baldwin, premiered at the Camerimage Festival in Poland without its star.
Director Joel Souza, who was also shot by Baldwin’s gun during the incident at Bonanza Creek Ranch, admitted that he understood why people were hesitant to watch the film, but hoped that viewers would give the film a chance.
After what legal experts described to Fox News Digital as a “joke of legal errors” in Baldwin’s July trial in Hutchins’ death, a New Mexico judge dismissed a manslaughter charge against the “30 Rock” actor. He was facing up to 18 months in prison.

Except for the fatal incident on October 21, 2021, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, “Rust” was completed with Baldwin as the main character.
“If people don’t want to see this movie, for whatever reason, they don’t need to and there’s no hard feelings from me,” Souza told The Hollywood Reporter. “But what I hope is that people give it a chance – and if they do, they look carefully at the visuals, especially the cinematography.”

He continued, “It is a very unique opportunity to look through Halyna’s eyes and see how she saw the world. How much she is missed is proven by the fact that many people came back to finish this film of hers. They came back and stepped into a difficult and burdensome situation because they were touched by her, and it was important that they finish this for her.”

Hutchins’ family boycotted Wednesday’s premiere of “Rust” over Baldwin’s reluctance to apologize for the fatal shooting. The first game was dedicated to Hutchins, with organizers holding a moment of silence in his memory.
“It has always been my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her career come to life on screen,” said Olga Solovey, Hutchins’ mother, in a statement provided to Fox News Digital. “Unfortunately, that was taken away from me when Alec Baldwin pulled out his gun and killed my daughter.”

He added, “Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death. Instead, he wants to profit unjustly from his murder of my daughter. That’s why I refuse to attend the festival to promote ‘Rust,’ especially now that there is no justice for my daughter .”

“It was important to her that people who know and love Halyna see her last work,” said Souza. The task was to “preserve every outline I could get of him, and honor his last work.”
Baldwin is still facing a civil lawsuit filed by Hutchins’ family. The actor’s legal team filed a request for a temporary suspension of the case on November 19, one day before the start of “Rust” in Poland.
