Costco will stop selling popular items year-round in January at most US stores: reports

Book hunters will be disappointed to learn that Costco plans to stop selling books in most of its US stores at the beginning of the year.
In January, Costco will remove the store’s popular book section from many of its 600-plus stores in the United States.
And it will only return during the holidays, from September to December, and at other times, the chain of discount stores told publishers in the summer, according to the New York Times.
Costco told management that this change was made because keeping books on tables is a lot of work and must be done by hand rather than with a forklift like other products, the Times reported.

The decision comes as more consumers buy books through online stores like Amazon.
The books will remain in about 100 Costco stores nationwide throughout the year, however, trade news magazine Publisher’s Weekly reported this week.
The decision to keep some books in stores will be a cancellation of previous store plans, the store reported.

Publishers and Costco will also be watching sales trends for Taylor Swift’s official album, Eras Tour, which is sold exclusively at Target starting on Black Friday, Publisher’s Weekly reports.
If book sales continue to do well, Costco could bring back book sections to many stores, according to the magazine, or all of them seasonally if sales slow.
