Dem Rep. Nadler stepped down from a top position on the Judiciary Committee, giving way to Raskin
Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., has dropped out of the running for the top ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, according to a Dear Colleague letter he sent Wednesday.
Nadler’s decision paves the way for Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., took over as the top Democrat on the committee. Raskin filed a motion to challenge Nadler.
“As our country faces the return of Donald Trump, and the renewed threats to our democracy and the way of life he represents, I have high hopes that Jamie will lead the Judiciary Committee as we face this growing threat,” Nadler wrote. allowing Raskin to follow him.

“Although I will no longer be an Ex-officio Member, I will continue to be an active member of the Committee, and I look forward to working with its new leadership in the fight to protect our most vulnerable communities and our most precious democratic ideals,” the 17-year-old New York Democrat added.
Nadler steps aside as several House Democrats have ambitions to unseat older, but established, leaders in the next Congress.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., earlier this week withdrew from the race for the top Democratic post on the Environment Committee after Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., announced his bid. A number of lawmakers are also challenging a member of the Agriculture Committee ranked by Rep. David Scott, D-Ga., for its work, Politico reported.
Nadler’s “ did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Raskin thanked Nadler for his approval of X.
“Jerry Nadler is an extraordinary lawyer, patriot and public servant. His staunch defense of civil rights and civil liberties is a great inspiration to our people. I am honored and humbled by his support in the battles ahead,” wrote the Maryland Democrat.

His presumptive elevation to the Judiciary Committee creates an opening for a ranking member of the House Oversight Committee. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has expressed interest in that role, among others.
“I have a lot of conversations with my colleagues,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters on Wednesday. “It is extremely important that we are fully prepared for the incoming Trump administration and to fight for everyday working Americans.”
