ESPN star Kirk Herbstreit announces the death of beloved dog Ben following a battle with cancer

ESPN data college football Commentator Kirk Herbstreit shared the heartbreaking news on social media Thursday that he had to make the difficult decision to put down his beloved dog, Ben, following a battle with cancer.

Herbstreit, who has been with Ben for a few weeks at a college football program, shared a health update with Ben’s many fans.

But on Thursday, Herbstreit announced that Ben’s cancer it had spread.

“It’s really hard to write this but so many of you love and care about Ben so much that I wanted to let you know. We found out today that the cancer has spread to Ben’s organs and there’s nothing we can do – we just had to let him go.”

Herbstreit, a self-proclaimed dog lover, spoke at length about her special relationship with Ben.

“He was smart-loving-gentle-patient-inquisitive-and accepting of all. Always a big smile and a soft tail wag. He and I could communicate..we got along and had each other’s backs. He was with me more than anyone at home and with me at work on a hard day. -but he will live among us all forever please bless his wonderful soul and thank you for putting him in my life for the past 10 years -a true blessing I love you Ben”

Herbstreit said in another post that the overwhelming support “hit home” on such a difficult day.

“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing in the last 3 hours with texts and tweets about my boy Ben. I’m truly overwhelmed by how many people have reached out – and from the bottom of my heart thank you for sending me your well wishes and letting me know how much you loved him,” she wrote.
