We’ve seen Ethan Ewing rock Slater’s Lemoore tank, and it’s always impressive. But in this clip, from Abu Dhabi’s new pool Kelly Slater Wave Co, Ewing surfing is absolutely killer. Perhaps the fact that in Abu Dhabi, salt water is pumped into the lake, which means that both the look and feel of the wave are natural.
It could also be that the wave is a little taller, allowing Ewing more room to move freely in the pocket. Either way, Ewing should be the favorite to win the WSL’s first Abu Dhabi Championship Tour event when it moves to the Middle East in a few months.
“It’s amazing,” Ewing said after his first wave, which opens the edit above. “It was so clean that it was difficult to tell where the lip was, and how steep it was. But it’s crazy. You won’t find a wave like that in the ocean.”
Since he was Ewing’s first wave, he cranked it up in third gear, going through lip slides and stylish snaps, before throwing the last part. From there, Ewing paddles (err, walks) back out and surfs after waves, surfing each one better than the last. His last wave of the day goes so well, with so much power and variety, the judges couldn’t help but give it a perfect 10. It has to be the best wave ever ridden in the middle east. At least until someone else (see: Filipe Toledo) steps it up in the coming months.
