FBI foils New York man’s ‘evil plot’ to wage jihad

FBI agents stopped a New York man from boarding a flight from New York to the Middle East, where he is said to be joining the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) to wage jihad, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). ).
The DOJ said in a press release that Syed Aman, a US citizen and resident of Nassau County, New York, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS.
Aman was arrested at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, while trying to board a flight to Doha, Qatar. The DOJ said Aman planned to travel to Syria from Qatar to join ISIS.
“As stated, Aman was determined in his efforts to go to the Middle East to join ISIS and fortunately his evil plan to fight Jihad failed,” said US Attorney Breon Peace. “My office will continue to identify and prosecute potential terrorists like the defendant before they are able to harm people at home or abroad in the name of ISIS.”

In a complaint filed Wednesday in federal court in Brooklyn, Aman is accused of expressing his support for ISIS on the group’s social media platform between 2023 and 2024. At the time, Aman allegedly sent money to someone he believed to be ISIS. operations, supporting ISIS efforts in Syria. He was also said to be planning to go to Syria to participate in jihad, or holy war, alongside ISIS.
Recently, Aman has been communicating with a confidential source (CHS) since early October 2024, regarding his plans to join ISIS.
While speaking to CHS, Aman reportedly said that fighting on behalf of ISIS and traveling to ISIS-controlled territory are “the most important things, more than anything else at the moment.”

The DOJ also said that Aman expressed hatred towards the “kuffar [non-believers] who reject the way of Allah,” he added, “[If] you don’t kill them, they will kill us, and destroy the world with decay.
On social media, Aman allegedly posted his desire to “kill Americans,” and wrote in a letter about becoming a martyr for ISIS.
In late October, Aman tried to book flights to the Middle East, but the credit card company blocked his purchase.
On the third attempt, however, Aman successfully booked a flight from JFK to Bangladesh via Doha, Qatar.

He reportedly told CHS that he plans to get off his plane in Qatar and buy a flight from Qatar to Turkey, where he will cross into Syria to join ISIS.
On Tuesday, Aman went to JFK airport to catch a flight to Qatar. After checking in and going through airport security, he tried to board his flight and was arrested by the FBI.

“Syed Aman is suspected of being determined in his efforts to support ISIS by donating funds and repeatedly attempting to travel overseas to engage in jihad on their behalf,” said Acting FBI Director Dennehy. “Thankfully, the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force was able to intervene before its disturbing plans to support a deadly terrorist organization came to fruition. The FBI, along with our law enforcement partners, are unmatched in our determination to protect our nation from those willing to support the evil of terrorism.”
