Former Israeli minister condemns ‘ethnic cleansing’ in Gaza

Former Israeli defense minister Moshe Ya’alon accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing” in the Gaza Strip in an interview with Israeli broadcaster Kan.

Ya’alon, who was the defense minister from 2013-2016, spoke about allegations that Israel plans to evict Palestinian residents from the northern Gaza Strip and establish Israeli settlements there.

He said he was speaking on behalf of the Israeli commanders assigned to northern Gaza who are very concerned about the situation.

“They are put in situations that put their lives at risk, they are facing a moral problem,” he said, adding that they may face charges before the International Criminal Court.

Israel is committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip, Ya’alon said.

His speech was criticized by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party as “a terrible lie.”

Far-right members of the Israeli government have repeatedly called for Israeli settlers to be returned to the Gaza Strip, but this is not official government policy.
