Here’s how VP-elect JD Vance’s Senate seat will be filled

As Sen. With JD Vance poised to take on the role of vice president next year, Ohioans will need someone to fill his Senate seat.

Initially, the governor of Ohio will contact someone to fill the vacancy created by Vance leaving the seat. Later, there will be a special election to fill Vance’s remaining Senate term, according to Ohio law.

“The nominee shall hold office until the fifteenth day of December following the regular state election which shall be more than one hundred and eighty days after the vacancy occurs,” Ohio law says.

“At such next election, a special election shall be held to fill the vacancy, provided that the unexpired term expires within one year after the date of the regular election, the election to fill the unexpired term shall not be held, and the appointment shall be for the unexpired term,” Ohio law says.

With current Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, expected to choose Vance’s interim successor, the seat should remain in GOP hands.

The special election will be held in November 2026, according to cincinnati.com.

Vance took office in 2023, and his Senate term does not expire until early 2029.

During his victory speech, Vance said, “After the greatest political comeback in American history, we will lead the greatest economic comeback in American history, under the leadership of Donald Trump.”

Earlier this year, businessman and author Vivek Ramaswamy told Fox News Digital that he would consider running for the Senate if asked to do so.

Ramaswamy filed for the GOP presidential nomination in 2023 before withdrawing in early 2024 and endorsing Trump.

The Fox News Decision Desk reported that Republicans won control of the Senate during the 2024 election.
