Two rebels have been killed as armed attacks continue in Indian-administered Kashmir.

A suspected insurgent was killed in a shootout with security forces in Indian-administered Kashmir, the army said, days after rebels killed two members of a government-backed militant group.

“One terrorist has been promised strength by the military [in Zabarwan forest near Srinagar city],” the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army said on Sunday.

The militants were engaged in two separate gun battles – one in Chaas area of ​​Kishtwar district in southern Jammu region and the other in Baramulla district north of Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir state, according to Indian media reports.

The gun battles come days after rebels killed two members of the government-run Village Defense Group in Kishtwar on Thursday. The armed group of Kashmir Tigers claims that this is the case of murder in a statement on the social media.

The separatists wanted independence or union with Pakistan. Many Kashmiri Muslims also support the rebels’ goals. Tens of thousands of civilians, rebels and government forces have been killed as India has deployed more than 500,000 troops to quell the violence.

New Delhi often accuses Pakistan of supplying the rebels with weapons and helping them launch attacks, which Islamabad denies.

India and Pakistan claim the whole of Kashmir but rule only a part of it. They fought two wars in the Himalayan region, which has seen decades of Indian insurgency.

An increase in attacks

Since October, rebel groups and the Indian army have exchanged fire, including attacking a military convoy and shooting at a construction camp, in which seven people were killed.

Last week, insurgents threw a bomb into a busy market in downtown Srinagar, injuring 12 people.

On Friday, the Indian military said a team of soldiers and police raided a village near the city of Sopore following a tip-off about the presence of armed rebels.

The military said in a statement that the rebels “fired indiscriminately” at the troops, resulting in gunfire, killing two fighters. Earlier, officials said two members of the Village Defense Group were killed by insurgents in southern Kishtwar on Thursday.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the X attack, saying, “I expect the security forces to quickly close any gaps in our anti-terrorist grid and ensure that such attacks stop completely.”

On Wednesday, the newly elected state assembly of Kashmir passed a resolution for New Delhi to restore its partial autonomy, which was stripped by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in 2019.

New Delhi stripped Kashmir of its special status in a sudden decision that was accompanied by mass arrests and a months-long communications blackout.

The Indian government condemned the decision. “No power in the world can restore Article 370 [of the Constitution, pertaining to partial autonomy] in Kashmir,” Modi said on Wednesday.
