Jewish students at DePaul University were targeted on campus by masked assailants

Two Jewish students were attacked by masked assailants on the campus of DePaul University in Chicago on Wednesday afternoon, according to a letter from the school’s president.
Robert Manuel said that the incident happened in front of the Student Center in the Lincoln Park wing at around 03:20 in the afternoon, which prompted the public to alert teachers, staff and students.
“I am saddened that this attack was directed at two Jewish students at DePaul who were showing support for Israel,” Manuel said.
The two students were beaten by the assailants, but refused medical treatment for their injuries.

“We are upset that this happened on our campus. It is absolutely unacceptable to violate DePaul’s principles of respecting and caring for the dignity of everyone,” said Manuel.
The university is providing care and services to students and is working with Chicago police to determine whether the attack could be considered a hate crime.
“We will do everything in our power to hold those responsible accountable for this terrible incident,” he added.

After the attack, DePaul said it will “continue to do everything possible to ensure” it is “safe and welcoming” for all members of the “diverse university community.”
“We recognize that for a large part of our Jewish community, Israel is a central part of Judaism,” Manuel said. “Those students — and every student — should feel safe on our university campus. Our shared expectations and guiding principles make it clear that DePaul will not tolerate any acts of hate or violence.”

“Please know that the safety and well-being of our university community is our top priority,” Manuel concluded.
