BAGUIO CITY – President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. on Sunday led the distribution of government aid in the province of Cagayan after Typhoon Yinxing (Local name: Marce).
Mr. Marcos offered financial assistance of P10 million from the Office of the President to each of the eight most affected villages – Aparri, Buguey, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Teresita, Baggao, Gattaran, Gonzaga and Santa Ana.
Underscoring the government’s commitment, the President, along with Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rexlon T. Gatchalian, also handed out relief packages to families in the town of Buguey.
The DSWD distributed 1,500 food packs while the Department of Agriculture (DA) provided P866.33 million worth of assistance to distressed farmers including hybrid rice seeds, fertilizer discounts and poultry assistance with native chickens and ducks to help farmers resume agricultural activities.
The Cagayan provincial government also provided 300 food packets with a stock of 500 packets ready for distribution, he said.
Typhoon Yinxing exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) after making two landfalls in Cagayan Province on Friday, bringing strong winds and heavy rains, and causing extensive damage across Cagayan.
Cagayan is still under a Yellow Rain Alert due to Tropical Storm Toraji (Nika) which is expected to bring moderate to heavy rain in a few hours from now.
This adds to the challenges of recovery in communities still dealing with the effects of Hurricane Marce, said Mr. Gatchalian. – Artemio A. Dumlao
