Matthew McConaughey Moved to Texas to Stop Being a ‘Rom-Com Dude’
Matthew McConaughey opens with why he left Hollywood for Texas.
The Oscar winner, 55, has received critical acclaim for his roles The Truth Detective again Dallas Buyers Clubbut in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he was best known as the leading man in rom-com movies like How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, Wedding Planner again Failed to Launch.
In a new interview on the “Good Trouble With Nick Kyrgios” podcast, which will air on Wednesday, November 20, McConaughey recalled how he found himself on “autopilot” in his career and said, “No, full stop, no. .”
“When I was in rom-coms, and I was a rom-com dude … that was my lane and I loved that lane, that lane paid well, and it worked,” the actor said. “I was so strong in that line that anything outside of that line, dramas and stuff that I wanted to do, [they] it was like, no, no, no, no, no. Hollywood said, ‘No, no, no, no, you have to stay there, stay there.’
That’s when McConaughey knew he had to make a change.
“Since I couldn’t do what I wanted to do, I stopped what I was doing and went down to the farms in Texas. I made a deal with my wife and said, ‘I’m not going back to work unless I get the roles I want to do,'” he added, referring to his wife, Camila Alves.
I A star The star said there were “scary” moments in what ended up being two years away from Hollywood. At one point, he even turned down a multi-million dollar drama film because he wanted to do a more demanding job.
“It was a great comedy. It came with an offer of $8 million. I said, ‘No, thank you,'” he said, although he did not specify which film he was to star in. “They came back with an offer of $10 million. I said, ‘No, thanks.’ They returned with an offer of $12 million. I said, ‘No, thanks.’ They returned with an offer of $14.5 million. I said, ‘Let me read that again.'”
In the end, McConaughey said no, he believed he had turned his fortunes around in Hollywood.
“I think that I saw that as a very rebellious act in Hollywood for me because it sent a signal that he’s not — bullshit. And if you find someone who doesn’t buy, there’s something attractive about that,” he said. “I think that’s what made Hollywood go, ‘You know what, now you’re a new novel idea. You’re a bright new idea.'”
Later, McConaughey was offered roles in Killer Joe, Mud, The Truth Detective again Dallas Buyers Clubestablishing himself as a serious actor.
“When those requests came, I was drooling, man. And I was bitten and I went back and worked as hard as I could and I loved and felt everything,” she said.
