No. 16 Arizona State defeats Arizona 49-7 in the Big 12 championship game

Cam Skattebo ran for 177 yards and three touchdowns, Sam Leavitt threw three scores and Arizona State finally put itself in the Big 12 championship game with a 49-7 rout of rival Arizona on Saturday.

The Sun Devils (10-2, 7-2 Big 12, No. 16 CFP) need a win and a little help to secure a spot in next Saturday’s Big 12 championship game. They got that help when TCU beat Cincinnati later Saturday, capping a trip to Arlington, Texas, next weekend, where they will face Iowa State for the conference title.

Arizona State left no doubt with a winning half.

The Sun Devils took a 35-0 halftime lead behind Skattebo’s three rushing touchdowns and let loose in the second half. Leavitt threw for 291 yards on 17-of-22 passing and Arizona State had 643 yards on the year after a 59-23 loss to Arizona at home.

Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan had six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown in what could be his final game before moving on to the NFL. The Wildcats (4-8, 2-7) did little on both sides of the ball to close out a difficult first season under coach Brent Brennan.

Humiliated in the final game of the Territorial Cup, the Sun Devils were determined to get revenge in the most outstanding way.

Mission accomplished.

Arizona State passed, passed and circled the Wildcats, starting with a 2-yard touchdown run by Skattebo. Jordyn Tyson turned a screen pass into a 13-yard touchdown and Skattebo made it 28-0 with a three-yard TD run.

Arizona State closed the half by stopping Arizona on downs and quickly marched down the field for a 22-yard touchdown pass from Leavitt to Chamon Metayer.

Former starting quarterback Trenton Bourguet threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Derek Eusebio – his first career reception – in the fourth quarter to put Arizona State up 49-7.

The takeaway

Arizona State: With redemption and a potential Big 12 title within reach, the Sun Devils grabbed both with a dominant performance.

Arizona: The Wildcats’ season started with high expectations and ended with a thud. Arizona has lost seven of its last eight games and closed with a loss that was almost as disappointing as a 70-7 home drubbing by Arizona State four years ago.

Next

Arizona State: Will play in the Big 12 title game, possibly in the CFP if things go well.

Arizona: The Wildcats are not bowl eligible after ending a five-year bowl-less streak last year. Arizona will likely lose McMillan, quarterback Noah Fifita and cornerback Tacario Davis, but should have plenty of other players next season.

It is reported by the Associated Press.
