Number. 1 college football recruit flips commitment from LSU to Michigan in shocking fashion

A shocker was reported in the world of college football recruiting on Thursday night, when Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 overall prospect in the ESPN 300, switching his commitment from LSU to Michigan.

Michigan has reportedly pulled out all the stops, along with its scouting book, to land Underwood, an in-state Belleville High School star.

The high school is half an hour away from Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

Underwood announced the news in a video on her Instagram story, captioning it “Hometown Hero.”

The early signing period for high school athletes is less than two weeks away, making this a big move for coach Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines.

Underwood makes history with this move to Michigan, becoming the highest-profile commitment in the program’s existence, not to mention Moore’s first-round recruit.

Moore took over from Jim Harbaugh as Michigan’s head coach after winning the team’s national title in 2023 when Harbaugh replaced the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to On3, Michigan was willing to offer Underwood $10.5 million in NIL over four years, an unprecedented sum for a player who has never played a college game.

The report added earlier this month that LSU hopes to keep Underwood committed after committing to the Tigers in January.

It is not known what Underwood’s NIL status with the Wolverines is, but we can say that it contributed to him staying in his hometown.

NO money at these universities changes the way they are recruited, and with Underwood being the consensus number 1, we can see how these programs can flex their financial muscle to get the best players in the country.

Michigan’s pursuit of Underwood has intensified over the past few months, according to ESPN, and the decommitment of four-star recruit Carter Smith has sparked rumors that Underwood may be fading.
