Palestinian President Abbas calls for territorial unity in Syria
After the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has asked to maintain the unity of the country of Syria.
“We reaffirm the need to respect the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic,” read a statement from his office in Ramallah in the West Bank, distributed by the official Wafa news agency.
“The land of Palestine and its people are on the side of the Syrian people who are brothers,” Abbas said in a statement.
Al-Assad’s government has been deeply hostile to Palestinian groups, especially Islamists. Hundreds of Palestinians are imprisoned in Syria under the Assad regime.
Abbas said it is now important for all political forces to focus on the interests of the Syrian people in order to restore an important role in the Syrian region. This will also benefit “the interests of the Palestinian people and their quest for freedom and independence,” Abbas said.
