The fall of the Assad regime is a ‘moment of historic opportunity’ for the Syrian people, Biden said

President Biden said at a press conference Sunday afternoon that the US will support Syria’s neighbors and help stabilize the region after dictator Bashar al-Assad fled the country amid an ongoing civil war.

“Finally, the Assad regime has fallen. This regime has brutalized and tortured and literally killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians. The fall of the regime is an important act of justice. It is a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country and it is a time of danger and uncertainty, “said Biden on Sunday during a press conference at the White House.

Biden explained that following the departure of Assad against the rebel forces, the US will support the neighboring countries of Syria – such as Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Israel – “if there is any threat from Syria during this transition period.” Biden said the effort would involve senior administration officials meeting with world leaders, as well as the president speaking directly with leaders of neighboring countries.

“Secondly, we will help stabilize, ensure stability in eastern Syria. To protect any personnel, our personnel, from any threats, and will remain our campaign against ISIS will be maintained, including the security of detention centers where ISIS prisoners are held as prisoners,” Biden continued with the action plan of America after the fall of the Assad regime. “…. Third, we will negotiate with all parties in Syria, including within the United Nations-led process to establish a transition from the Assad regime to an independent” Syrian.

ASSAD ARRIVES IN MOSCOW, GIVEN BY RUSSIA

Bashar al-Assad fled Syria after rebels stormed the capital Damascus on Saturday. Assad, whose government has repeatedly used chemical weapons against his own citizens, is reported to have fled with his wife and children.

Biden said the United States is not sure where Assad is, saying “there is word that he is in Moscow.”

Syria has been in the middle of a nearly 14-year civil war as Islamist rebels have tried to overthrow Assad and his family, who have ruled the country for the past 50 years.

“The United States will do everything we can to support it [Syrians]including humanitarian aid, to help restore Syria after more than a decade of war and generations of brutality by the Assad family,” Biden said.

“And finally, we will remain vigilant. Make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that ousted Assad have their own terrible history of terrorism and human rights abuses. We have paid attention to the statements of the leaders of these organizations recently. And they are saying the right things now, but since they are taking on a lot of responsibility, we will not only check their words , but also their actions,” Biden said on Sunday.

The president noted that the US will continue efforts to protect American journalist Austin Tice, who has been missing in Syria for more than ten years.

“We remember that there are Americans in Syria, including those who live there, and Austin Tice, who was kidnapped more than 12 years ago. We are committed to returning him to his family,” said Biden.

Before reports that Assad was fleeing, President-elect Trump warned that the United States should not get involved in a civil war.

“Syria is a mess, but it is not our friend, AND THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR WAR. LET IT PLAY. DON’T INTERFERE!” he wrote.

Trump added on Truth Social early Sunday morning: “Assad is gone. He fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was no longer interested in protecting him. There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place. They lost interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where nearly 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could have gone on forever.

“Russia and Iran are in a weak position right now, one because of Ukraine and the bad economy, the other because of Israel and its fighting success,” his work continued. “Likewise, Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness. Ironically they have lost 400,000 soldiers, and many civilians. There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu applauded the fall of the Assad regime on Sunday, saying it was a “direct result” of Israel’s attacks on Iran and Hezbollah, while noting that the overall situation is “fraught with grave dangers.” Israel is in the middle of a war that has lasted more than a year after Hamas launched an attack on the nation on October 7, 2023.

“This is a historic day in the Middle East. The fall of the Assad regime, the dictatorship in Damascus, offers great opportunity but is also fraught with significant risks.
