The helicopter drop before Utah’s state championship game is getting worse
If the NFL ever looked for new ideas to spice up how it decides which team starts the game with the football, it can look to the Utah 1A Eight-Player State Championship.
The game between Rich High School and Monticello High School escalated as a helicopter was seen flying over the field, hovering over the field and dropping the ball for the captain to throw the game away.

Kansas City Chiefs running backs coach Porter Ellett posted a video on his X account showing a helicopter flying toward the field.
“My nephew is playing for the state title today. Instead of a coin toss, they dropped the ball in a helicopter and let the captains fight for it. Bring it to the @NFL league” Ellett wrote in the post.
It was later clarified that the ritual coin toss took place before the ball dropped.

Rich won the game against Monticello 50-14, but the fans couldn’t get enough of the idea to throw the ball down the field and let the two players fight for the ball.
It reminded one of the original Xtreme Football League and how they decided to have it when the league started.

The coin toss was replaced by a scramble which saw one player from each team run to find the ball 20 yards away. However, the XFL’s first injury occurred during the mix-up, and critics focused on it from the start.
