The Late Prince’s Sister Tyka Nelson: 5 Things You Should Know

The Prince and his younger sister, Thika Nelsonthey had a strong bond throughout their lives.

Nelson was Prince’s only brother. Before their parents, John L. Nelson again Mattie Della Shaw Bakermarried, the couple had children from previous marriages. It also includes Prince and Tyka’s siblings Sharon, Norrine again John Nelson (who died in 2021), Alfred Jackson (who died in 2019) and Omar Baker.

While Prince and Tyka had a great brood combined, the brother and sister duo (who were two years apart) had a close bond as they bonded over their shared love of music. As Prince found success, Tyka admitted that he didn’t realize how much money his older brother really had.

“I didn’t know Prince was that big,” he recalls of a trip to London to promote a Prince show in 2017. “They lined up to tell me stories. Women would tell me, ‘I’m going to kill myself and wear this [Prince] I heard the song on the radio and I didn’t want to die.’ That is very good. Now you’re going to make me cry.”

In April 2016, Prince was found dead at the age of 57 in an elevator at his Paisley Park home in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The cause of his death was determined to be an overdose of the opioid fentanyl.

Eight years later, Tyka died at the age of 64 according to his son, President Nelson.

He was also a musician

Tyka followed in the footsteps of his parents and brother by becoming a singer. When she and Prince were children, they were inspired Elvis Presley and they would make themselves famous.

“I wanted to be Shirley Temple. [Prince and I] we practiced signing our autographs,” he recalled Star Tribune June 2024. “I was 5 years old, he was 7 years old. I didn’t know what I was doing. He knew he would be famous.”

He released his first album, Royal Bluein 1988. Throughout his career, he has released a total of four studio albums and performed on stage. Tyka was preparing to retire from music in June 2024 with a final concert in Minneapolis. However, he fell ill and canceled the show.

He considered himself a writer

While Tyka was gifted with voice, she found herself more drawn to the written word.

“I wasn’t really a singer. I am a writer,” he told the newspaper Star Tribune in June 2024. “I just know how to sing. I enjoy singing.”

Aside from writing music, Tyka teased that he is in the process of putting his story on paper.

“We’ve got a few more chapters,” he told the producer of the potential memorabilia, which was not picked up by the publisher at the time. “It’s about me and my family.”

He had 6 children

Tyka was married to a husband Maurice Phillips. The couple were the parents of daughters Danielle Phillips, Crystal Phillips, Chelsea Phillips these sons Richard Phillips, Mr. Montece Laeil and the President.

He was named as one of the Prince’s Heirs

After Prince’s shocking death in 2016, Tyka and his siblings were named as the legal heirs to Prince’s estate as he died without a will. Tyka ended up selling most of his shares in Prince’s estate but kept 2 percent for himself and his family.

He wanted to keep Prince’s Legacy

Tyka worked hard to keep Prince’s memory alive and always honor him. Another way he wanted to honor his brother was by releasing another 2,000 unreleased songs from Prince that were stored in his room.

“He wrote a lot of music and in one of our interviews, he said, ‘The way I want to be remembered is as one of the most successful writers in the world,'” he said in an interview in October 2016. Entertainment Tonight. “So I will do everything I can to make that dream come true.”
