After Hercules again Xena became huge hits in sales, other networks wanted to try their hand at the cheesy fantasy adventure genre. None have tried as hard as the TNT cable network.

Instead of Greek mythology, the network decided to bring one of the most famous heroes to life The New Adventures of Robin Hood. If you remember watching it, there’s a very good chance it’s because of the famous marketing stunt involving Hulk Hogan that tricked viewers into watching the first episode.

The Unknown Game of Robin Hood

TNT wanted a big number for the first game of The New Adventures of Robin Hoodand at that time, WCW Monday Nitro it was the hottest show on cable. This was because a few months earlier, when Hulk Hogan made the NWO and suddenly, pro-wrestling was cool.

On January 13, 1997, 12 days before they were to clash The NWO Has Been De-Souled Pay Per View, “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan and The Giant (Paul Wight) had a match, but it would air during a commercial break for the new series. For more than 30 minutes, during the break, the fans were treated to a “live” match, which actually only lasted nine minutes but was edited to appear longer and keep the fans watching.

Derided as a parody of “The Robin Hood” in wrestling fan circles for decades, it was an embarrassment to both the network and WCW (both owned by Ted Turner). No one has tried a promotional tactic as misleading and deceptive since then.

The New Adventures of Robin Hood didn’t retain much of that initial audience, but those who stuck around for the next four seasons were able to enjoy a cheesy, corny, low-budget, but incredibly entertaining take on the British fairy tale.

The New Adventures of Robin Hood We wasted no time introducing magical weapons, monsters, witches, aliens, and finally, time travel. Casting Warwick Davis as Big John was indicative of the show’s tone. It sounds like it shouldn’t have worked, and it didn’t, but that was a big part of the beauty of the show.

to fix the Hercules again Xena the Robin Hood formula consisted of making episodes that were homages to different movies. These include Seven Samuraia Predator-like hunt in the woods in Season 4 and the Season 2 episode, “Outlaw Express,” which Face off and Robin and his double evil. Yes, there is also a time loop The Groundhog Date-style episode and one featuring Elvis is taken back in time to Sherwood Forest.

The New Adventures of Robin Hood began to surprise after it switched from TNT to commercial in season 3.

That change is part of why the series is impossible to watch today, because not only has it not been broadcast, but only the first season has ever been released on DVD. If it weren’t for Matthew Porretta’s YouTube channel where he posted videos about his time doing this series, The New Adventures of Robin Hood it may have completely disappeared.

There is always hope that a series will appear somewhere; after all, The Drew Carey Show made it to the airwaves for the first time this year, but until then, describing the moment Robin Hood met Elvis will make you sound crazy.
