Thousands of cucumbers, eggs recalled for salmonella concerns

Thousands of pickles sold in the United States and Canada and eggs sold in several US states are being recalled due to salmonella concerns, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.

SunFed Produce is recalling all sizes of all its fresh American cucumbers packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled “SunFed” or labeled “Agrotato, SA de CV,” the grower’s name, sold between Oct. 12 and Nov. 26.

The voluntary recall came after 68 people became ill after eating cucumbers, including 18 who were hospitalized, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

Cucumbers are sold in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, I -Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Ontario.

“As soon as we heard about this issue, we took immediate action to protect consumers. We are working closely with authorities and the affected farm to determine the possible cause,” said Craig Slate, president of SunFed. “Here at SunFed, food safety and the health and well-being of consumers have been our top priorities for more than 30 years. We require all of our farmers to strictly comply with FDA food safety requirements.”

In another recall, more than 10,000 cartons of eggs sold under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand were voluntarily recalled over concerns they might be contaminated with salmonella, although no one has gotten sick.

The eggs were sold in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee at 25 Costco stores starting Nov. 22.

Handsome Brook Farms initiated the recall after determining that the eggs “were not intended for commercial distribution and were instead packaged and distributed in retail packages.”

“Additional procurement controls and retraining are being implemented to prevent recurrence,” the company said.

TORTILLA STRIPS ARE CALLED BECAUSE THEY CAN’T BE REFUSED

The recall applies only to units with Julian code 327 and Use By Jan 5, 2025.

“No other products are affected by this recall,” the FDA said.

Salmonella is a foodborne illness that can cause fever, diarrhea and nausea and can be life-threatening in young and old and those with weakened immune systems.
