A 72-year-old man is suspected of falling from a boat near San Francisco

A missing 72-year-old man is believed to have jumped ship outside San Francisco early Monday, according to cruise and local authorities.

It was not immediately clear what led up to the incident, but a Princess Cruises spokeswoman said their team had reviewed video footage from the ship and had “searched repeatedly to no avail,” ruling out any other leads to the man’s whereabouts.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was traveling alone on the Ruby Princess, which departed San Francisco on Nov. 27 for a five-day cruise, according to Briana Latter, spokeswoman for Princess Cruises. The ship was scheduled to return to San Francisco shortly before 7 a.m. Monday after visiting San Diego and Ensenada, Mexico.

The man is believed to have boarded the boat on Monday morning before the ship stopped, Latter said in a statement.

“We express our condolences to the family and friends of the guest,” said Latter.

The US Coast Guard was called to assist in the investigation Monday afternoon, sending two planes to search waters 45 miles off the coast of Monterey, Petty Officer Hunter Schnabel said. He said they stopped the search on Monday night but to no avail.

Schnabel said the California Highway Patrol was assisting boaters in the investigation, but CHP officials did not immediately respond to questions from The Times.
