US President Biden hopes that the American people will understand the son’s pardon

American President Joe Biden has issued an official pardon for his son Hunter, who was facing two criminal convictions, although he had previously rejected it.

In a statement, the president said that his son was “released alone” and called his crimes “violations of the law”.

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to tax charges in early September, and was convicted of illegal drug and gun possession charges in June – becoming the first child of a president to ever be convicted.

Reacting to the pardon, President-elect Donald Trump said: “Does the Pardon given to Joe Hunter include [6 January] They were kidnapped, and now they have been imprisoned for years? Such torture and miscarriage of Justice!”.

The full and unconditional amnesty comes after the president said he would not spare his son.

A few months ago, in September, the press secretary at the White House said that Biden would not issue a pardon for his son.

But on Sunday evening, President Biden said that although he believes in the justice system, “politics has infected the process and led to a miscarriage of justice”.

“From the day I took office I said that I will not interfere in the decision-making of the Ministry of Justice, I kept my word as I watched my son being prosecuted in a selective and unfair way,” he said.

Biden said he was struggling with this decision, adding: “If I made this decision this weekend, there was no point in postponing it.”

“I hope that the American people will understand why my father and the President will reach this decision,” he said.

In his response statement, Hunter Biden said the mistakes he made during the worst days of his addiction were “used to publicly humiliate and embarrass” his family through political games.

“I will never take for granted the sympathy given to me today and I will dedicate the life I have rebuilt to help those who are still sick and suffering,” added the 54-year-old.

Young Biden has been sober for five and a half years, his father said.

This is not the first time that the president of the United States has pardoned a member of their family.

Bill Clinton pardoned his younger brother, Roger Clinton, for a 1985 cocaine-related conviction in 2001.

In 2020, Donald Trump pardoned Charles Kushner, the father-in-law of his daughter Ivanka. President-elect Trump has done it recently announced Kushner as ambassador to France in his new cabinet.

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to nine counts of tax fraud in September, facing up to 17 years in prison.

He was also convicted of three counts of possession of a firearm in June, for which he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Sentencing for these cases was scheduled for December 12 and 16.

His legal troubles cast a dark cloud over his father’s presidential campaign, which ended the following July Biden has dropped out of the election race.

Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as a member of the Democratic Alliance he lost the election to Donald Trump in November.

Trump is expected to take over the Oval Office from Biden on January 20, 2025 – Inauguration Day.
